Effect of Arginine Modified Chitosan and Its Derivatives on Reduction of Formaldehyde and Odor Emission from Fiberboards
In this study, two new scavengers were prepared by using arginine(Arg)modified chitosan(CTS)or Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan(HACC).The effects of the new scavengers on the reduction of formaldehyde emission,VOCs,and odor from fiberboards were investigated. The results showed that after applying Arg-CTS and Arg-HACC,the formaldehyde emission from fiberboards were reduced by 57.89%and 75.00%respectively,The formaldehyde emission from Arg-HACC spray samples was lower under the combined action of chemical reactions and physical shielding.Although aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and acid compounds from fiberboards were partially scavenged, the release of terpenes, esters, and aromatic compounds was enhanced by Arg-CTS,Arg-HACC.The odor substances with the odor activity value(OAV)greater than 1 in fiberboards mainly include hexanal(green grass flavor),heptanal(fruit flavor),octanal(sharp and powerful fat wax aroma with fruit and jasmine flavor),and nonanal(strong oil and sweet orange flavor). The OAV of these odor substances were significantly reduced by Arg-CTS or Arg-HACC.Furthermore,the deodorizing effect of Arg-HACC was better than that of Arg-CTS.Ultimately,the odor level of fiberboard samples sprayed with Arg-HACC purification agent decreased from level 3 to level 2.
