Advances in treatment of wastewater containing phenolic compounds via electrocatalytic membrane process
Phenolic compounds such as phenol, bisphenol A,and 4-nitrophenol are common high toxic and difficult to degrade organic pollutants in the wastewater produced from petrochemical and chemical industries.Traditional techniques such as adsorption, chemical oxidation, and biochemical degradation etc.are difficult to remove them efficiently and completely.Under the background of"dual carbon",the research and development of new methods for treating those pollutants are benefit for environmental protection and achieving the goal of green and sustainable development.Electrocatalytic membrane technology is a new technology that combines membrane filtration with electrochemical advanced oxidation. It has advantages such as high efficiency and no secondary pollution etc.,and has gradually become an important development direction in the field of treating organic pollutants. In this article,we firstly give a brief overview of the sources, hazards, and traditional treatment methods of phenolic wastewater. Then, the recent research progress of the mechanisms of removal of phenolic pollutants via electrocatalytic membranes, the design and preparation of membrane electrode materials, the main influencing factors of electrocatalytic membrane process for treating phenolic pollutants, and the combination of electrocatalytic membranes and related technologies for treating phenolic wastewater are introduced systematically. The development status, advantages, existing problems, and challenges of this technology are also analyzed and summarized. At last, the prospect of electrocatalytic membranes process applied to treat of phenolic wastewater is proposed.
