Book Production and Creators in Early Modern China—Discussion Centered on Gu Shi Hua Pu
Gu Shi Hua Pu,also known as Li Dai Ming Gong Hua Pu,is a collection of woodblock prints published during the Wanli of the Ming Dynasry.Unlike the previous production model where only a few people such as booksellers,authors,artists,and engravers(some even have prefaces)were involved,the editorial team of this book reaches up to a hundred people,including booksellers,artists,as well as a large number of Jinshi,Juren,local officials,local celebrities.As a commercial publication of commercial publishing,this book provides an example of research on the production of commercial books in the late Ming.This article does not discuss the printmaking work itself,but rather explores the identities of the numerous creators of the book,the collaboration in its production,and the production process from the perspective of book history.It also discusses the significance of the book's production in the context of early modern China.
