The Exception,the Frontier,and the South:From"Avant-Garde-Guerrilla Warfare"to"Radical-Ecology"—"Caring Turn"in Contemporary Art
During his lifetime, the artist Huang Yongping referred several times to Carl Schmitt's"Guerrilla Theory"and its influence and inspiration on his creations,in response to the increasingly complex and intense global cultural exchanges and geopolitics that have taken place since the"9·11"attacks.Almost simultaneously,Schmitt's other theory"State of Exception",interpreted by Giorgio Agamben, also entered the art world and provided an important theoretical resource for redefining"Contemporary Art".The three exhibitions"ON|OFF"and"State of Exception"held by UCCA and"Frontiers:Topology of Geography"held by OCAT Shanghai are the best examples.Especially the"Frontiers"exhibition, through the in-depth elaboration of"boundary"and"frontier",reveals that"Frontiers"is not only an"avant-garde-guerrilla warfare",but also a"radical-ecology"."Ecology"is not so much a type of artistic practice as a way of knowing, and thus deeply attuned to the new trends of"caring turn","weak universalism"and"New South narrative"in contemporary art.
