"The Eight Scenes of Xinan"and the Construction of the Squire's Discourse on the Creation of Painting and Calligraphy in Huizhou in the Ming and Qing Dynasties
The"Eight Sceneries"is a transcendental human landscape concept based on multiple experiences such as vision, imagination, anticipation, and memory, which widely occurs in traditional rural and urban areas. Not only that, but also to a considerable extent reflects the demands of local officials for cultural orthodoxy. The concept of the"Eight Sceneries",therefore,is expressed in a formulaic and romantic way through calligraphy, painting and poetry. This is a continuous process of shaping, closely linked to the construction of the cultural subject identity of local elites and the reinforcement of power discourses.Taking the eight scenes of Xixinan village in Huizhou as an example, the process of shaping the cultural concept under the guidance of this lineage elite group not only maps the trajectory of the rise and fall of Huizhou merchants. It also shows that the concept of the eight sceneries has the attribute of transcending time and space. This concept fits the demands of the gentry elite and caters to the needs of the elegant ideal experience, and extends its potential influence through different types of cultural creations.
