Research on the Character Image Change of French"Chinoiserie"Decorative Patterns in the Second Half of the 17th Century
Unlike the 16th century European"Chinoiserie"decorative patterns, which either imitated Chinese figure motifs or inserted Western figures into Chinese designs,in the latter half of the 17th century, the depiction of figures in French"Chinoiserie"began to exhibit characteristics of French art, showcasing an innovative interpretation of Chinese themes. This transformation was primarily driven by two factors. On the one hand, the widespread circulation of European publications introducing Chinese customs and culture, along with their illustrations, provided French artists with a wealth of visual resources and new perspectives for image innovation. On the other hand, through the collaborative efforts of French artists and designers in image creation and pattern design, they successfully developed figure-centered decorative motifs with distinct French characteristics, which ultimately became iconic in European"Chinoiserie"decorative arts.
