Abstract
Clement Greenberg is one of the most important art critics of the 20th century.His views on art criticism,especially on modernist paintings,have profoundly influenced the Western art criticism in the 20th century.According to Greenberg,the trend of modernist painting to emphasize more and more on flatness made the boundary between it and decoration become more and more blurred.In the long run,this would lead to the gradual loss of traditional painting's identity as a"high"art.In view of this,modernist painting must find ways to defend its self-discipline against the encroachment of decorative techniques.In any case,this perspective is essential for an in-depth understanding of the concept of"decorative".
