The Ancient and the Powerful Are the Ancestors:The Construction of the Historical View of Official Script in Yang Shoujing's Calligraphy Philosophy
The large number of official scripts unearthed in the early Qing Dynasty provided important basic materials for academic research and calligraphy tracing in the Qing Dynasty.The re-understanding and adoption of official scripts led to the resurgence of seal script and official script and kicked off the concept of stele studies.As an important representative calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty,Yang Shoujing broadened his horizons on the basis of inheriting the early ideas of stele studies,paid attention to the textual research of stele editions,the method of obtaining official scripts and the comments of contemporary people,and finally constructed a historical view of official scripts based on ancient and powerful.While promoting the study of official script in theory and practice,it also played a guiding role in establishing Kang Youwei as a model for famous calligraphers in the Northern Dynasties.It is an important addendum to the study of the stele system.
