Objective To determine the objective sleep characteristics of Parkinson's disease(PD)patients based on polysomnography(PSG).Methods Fifty-two patients with PD and 20 healthy subjects who were admitted to Changshu Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Unirersity of Chinese Mdeicine between January 2019 and December 2021 were enrolled in the current study.All study participants underwent PSG.The sleep structure of the two groups was analyzed,including total sleep time(TST),sleep efficiency(SE),sleep latency(SL),rapid eye movement sleep latency(REM-S),N1%,N2%,N3%,and REM%.The sleep structure and cognition of patients with PD with or without rapid eye movement sleep disorder(RBD)were compared.Results The TST,SE,and REM%in the PD group were lower than the healthy control group,while N1%and REM-S were higher in the PD patients than the healthy control group(P<0.05).There were no significant differences in SL,N2%,and N3%between the two groups(P>0.05).The incidence of sleep disorders in the PD group(80.77%)was significantly higher than the healthy control group(45.00%;P<0.05).The incidence of RBD in the PD group(51.92%)was higher than the healthy control group(5.00%);the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).Sleep disruption was the main type of insomnia in both groups;the incidence of sleep disruption in the PD group(73.08%)was significantly higher than the healthy control group(40.00%;P<0.05).The incidence of sleep apnea was not statistically different between the two groups(P>0.05).There were 27 and 25 PD patients with and without RBD,respectively;the sleep structure was not statistically significant between the 2 sub-groups(P>0.05).The difference in cognition and disease severity was greater in PD patients without RBD than PD patients with RBD(P<0.05).Conclusions The objective sleep characteristics of PD patients are mainly characterized by a sleep structure disorder,sleep quality,and sleep inefficiency,and a higher incidence of sleep disorders than healthy controls.RBD is not shown to affect sleep structure;however,cognition and disease severity is shown to affect the occurrence of RBD.
