Objective To determine the current status of illness perception and self-management behavior among hypertensive patients in the community,and the correlation between illness perception and self-man-agement behavior.Method A total of 407 patients with essential hypertension from 3 communities in Xiang-tan City were studied from October 2021 to August 2022.A general information questionnaire,the brief illness perception questionnaire(BIPQ),and hypertension patients self-management behavior rating scale(HPSMBRS)were used.Results The BIPQ score was(42.95±8.00)points and the HPSMBRS score was(96.39±20.26)points.The total HPSMBRS score was positively correlated with the total BIPQ score and various items(P<0.05).The type of medical insurance,duration of hypertension,educational level,and age of patients had a significant impact on disease perception(P<0.05).Conclusions The illness perception of patients with essential hypertension in the community was shown to influence self-management behavior.Enhancing illness perception can improve patient self-management ability.
