Textual Research on the Two Letters Not Included in the Collection of Letters Written by Mao Dun to Zhao Qingge
Included in Mao Dun's Precious Handwritten Letters, compiled by the Archives Bureau of the Tongxiang Municipality in Zhejiang Province are the twenty-five letters written by Mao Dun to Zhao Qingge. Two of them are not included in the letter volumes(Volumes 36-38)of the Complete Works of Mao Dun,which can be regarded as letters not included in the collection. The two letters were written to Zhao Qingge on Jan.19,1998 and on a Sept.7 with no year specified, respectively. The contents of the letters as well as relevant literature surround-ing them show that the Sept.7 should be in 1997.The two letters describe the details of Mao Dun's late life from 1977 to 1978 and his close interaction with literary circles then.An interpretation of the two letters based on the relevant details as well as literature surrounding them enables academic circles to have more knowledge of compli-cated society and history behind the letters in addition to the special significance of the"duty-bound"history of lit-erature plus history of thought that Mao Dun raised and emphasized.
