Central Government's Military Management of the Southwest Region in the Late Tang Dynasty:Focused on the Conscription System
In the late Tang Dynasty, the system of recruiting soldiers replaced the stationary-troop service sys-tem,becoming a national military system, and the central government of the Tang Dynasty also relied on military governors to recruit and train troops in the Southwest region, and organized the troops of prefectures to defend the border and engage in fighting.Cui Ning,Wei Gao,Li Deyu and other military governors in Xichuan,Jiannan con-tinuously reformed the military system and improved the fighting capacity of the Jiannan army. Thanks to rectifica-tion by the previous military governors, the military system of the Southwest region in the late Tang Dynasty took on quite obvious mixed characteristics. What is more important, the military troops of prefectures in the Southwest region were responsible for border defence and external warfare, especially in the face of repeated invasions by Tubo and Nanzhao. The troops of prefectures in the Southwest region played an important role in consolidating the border. After the Qianfu period, with a decline of border threats, the troops of prefectures in the Southwest region gradually became a tool for the military governors to compete for power and profit, and basically lost its function of defending the border and engaging in external warfare.
