Abandoning Illusions and Looking into the Future:Sino-U.S.Relations in 1949 and China's Path to Modernization
Seventy-five years ago,Mao Ze-dong released a series of articles such as"On the People's Democratic Dictatorship","Abandon Illusions and Prepare for Struggle","Farewell,Leighton Stuart","Why to Discuss the White Paper?","Friendship or Aggression?","The Bankruptcy of Ideological Views on History",analyzing the reasons why the new China had to make a break with the United States'China policy after World War Ⅱ.In particular,the articles argued in depth from the political and military perspectives the reasons why the bourgeois republic would not be feasible in China,elaborated on the political choices of the social classes on the direction of China's development,and exhorted the pro-U.S.faction and the intermediate forces,who could not see the truth,to abandon their illusions about the United States and get ready for the struggle for thoroughly achieving national independence and people's liberation.Revisiting Mao Ze-dong's analysis of the situation in 1949 is an important source of inspiration and reference for currently understanding Sino-U.S.relations and China's path to modernization.
