On Spiritual Shaping and Cultural Mission:A Perspective from Two Speeches at the Symposiums on the Arts
Mao Ze-dong's Speech at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art and Xi Jin-ping's Speech at the Symposium on Literary and Artistic Work share the same basic stance and theme,despite their different contexts.The root causes of all the problems in contemporary Chinese literary and artistic circles can be correctly comprehended through the essence of these two speeches:first,they are trapped in metaphysical thinking;second,they are confined to the fallacious"philosophy of struggle";and third,they dodge the"ultimate goal".Without the prosperity of Chinese culture,there will be no great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.Remodeling the Chinese spirit in the new era constitutes the mission and goal of contemporary literary and artistic work.In this regard,reviewing the essence of the two speeches at the symposiums on the arts is of great help not only for recognizing the epochal and national nature of the Chinese spirit,but also for solving the current predicament of literary and artistic development.
