From"Equality of Rights"to Substantive Equality:The Implications of Marx's Concept of Equality in the New Era
"Equality of rights"and substantive equality refer to two different concepts of equality.As sharing the same value orientation,they are confronted with a tension in terms of content and requirements.The former focuses on procedures,opportunities,and rights,while the latter emphasizes people's real needs,the overall process,and substantive results.Based on historical materialism,Marx deeply analyzed the historical rationality and limitations of"equality of rights"and reconstructed the realm of substantive equality in the communist society,where"from each according to his abilities,to each according to his needs"comes into being.Marx's idea of substantive equality is not only of theoretical significance in promoting China's modernization,but also of great practical value in realizing common prosperity in the new era.
