Research progress on ammonia-coal co-combustion in industrial applications
As China's energy consumption increases, the energy supply should be ensured while reducing the use of coal is imperative. Therefore, the exploration of alternative fuels becomes necessary.Consequently,in recent years,ammonia-coal combustion technology, which partially substitutes ammonia for pulverized coal combustion, has attracted widespread attention. It means that ammonia-coal co-combustion technology is highly regarded for its po-tential to reduce pollutants emitted from coal combustion and improve energy utilization efficiency. The latest develop-ments in the research field of ammonia-coal co-combustion were demonstrated, including studies on flame morpholo-gy,coal powder ignition and ignition delay time, flame propagation mechanism, and Nox emissions. The combus-tion characteristics and emission characteristics of ammonia-coal co-combustion under different combustion strategies and burner configurations were summarized, some significant breakthroughs achieved in the industrial application of ammonia-coal co-combustion technology worldwide were analyzed, the potential challenges for future research were discussed. The reaction pathways and mechanism models of ammonia-coal co-combustion are complex and vary under different conditions, which requiring further clarification of the multiple roles of intermediate substances. Moreover, there is a need for in-depth research on the influence of gas components on the generation of coal powder and NOx.Currently, research on ammonia-coal co-combustion ignition and the reduction of Nox emissions predominantly con-centrate on macroscopic rules, although some studies have commenced analyzing intermediate products during the co-combustion process.Nevertheless, there exists a dearth of fundamental research, and the mechanisms remain ambig-uous.The challenge in designing suitable burners and the immaturity of technologies highlight the need for further op-timization.In the future, further research can be conducted on improving the ammonia blending ratio and reducing pollutant emissions, the application of ammonia coal mixed combustion in large-scale industries such as thermal power plants can be achieved.
