Mediating effect of meaning in life and self-esteem between sense of control and sleep quality of elderly people
Objective To explore the effect of sense of control on sleep quality of the elderly,and the mediating effect of meaning in life and self-esteem between sense of control and sleep quality.Methods Convenience sampling was used to select 1,952 elderly people and they were surveyed by using Sense of Control Scale,Meaning in Life Scale,Self-esteem Scale and Athens Insomnia Scale.A mediating model was constructed and tested.Results The total score of sense of control,meaning in life,self-esteem and sleep quality of elderly people in this group was 55.80±10.46,46.02±10.83,30.62±4.16,and 4.68±3.67,respectively.Sense of control had a significant negative predictive effect on sleep quality(β=-0.270,P<0.001).Meaning in life played a partial mediating role between sense of control and sleep quality(β=-0.042,P<0.001),accounting for 15.56%of the total effect.Self-esteem moderated the mediated effect of meaning in life(β=0.058,P=0.003).Conclusion The mediating effect of meaning in life and self-esteem on sense of control and sleep quality of the elderly is established.Targeted intervention measures should be considered to promote sense of control,meaning in life and self-esteem of elderly people,so as to improve their sleep quality.
