Influence of intergenerational co-parenting relationship on maternal depression in mothers of infants aged 0 to 3 years
Objective To explore the impacts of intergenerational co-parenting relationship on depressive symptoms in mothers of infants aged 0-3 years,and the mediating role of couples'co-parenting relationship,mothers'parenting stress,and parenting competence and perceived stress.Methods With convenience sampling,230 mothers in intergenerational co-parenting families with infants aged 0-3 years were selected in the postpartum outpatient clinic of a tertiary grade-A maternal and child healthcare hospital and community health centers in Shenzhen from January to April 2023.The General Information Questionnaire,Grandparent-Parent Co-Parenting Relationship Scale,Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale,Brief Co-parenting Relationship Scale,Parenting Stress Index-Short Form,Parenting Sense of Competence Scale,and the 4-item Perceived Stress Scale were used for the investigation.Results In this study,34.8%of the mothers reported depressive symptoms.The depression score of mothers with different monthly income,education background,and self-reported sleep quality during pregnancy were statistically significant(P<0.05).Intergenerational co-parenting relationship,couples'co-parenting relationship,parenting stress,parenting competence,and perceptual stress were correlated to mothers'depression score(r=-0.417,-0.430,0.520,-0.615,and 0.682 respectively,P<0.01).Intergenerational co-parenting relationships can directly work on maternal depressive symptoms,and mediate maternal depressive symptoms through the single mediator of perceptual stress,or through the chain mediation of the couple's co-parenting relationship,parenting stress,and parenting sense of competence and perceived stress.The efficiency of intergenerational co-parenting,couple co-parenting,parenting stress,parenting competence and perceived stress on maternal depressive symptoms was-0.444,-0.228,0.287,-0.517 and 0.427,respectively.Conclusion Depressive symptoms of mothers of infants aged 0-3 years is at a high level.Intergenerational co-parenting relationship may impact maternal depression directly,or influence maternal depression with the mediator of couple's co-parenting relationship,mother's parenting stress,parenting sense of competence,and perceived stress.It is important to develop quality intergenerational co-parenting relationship between generations to prevent postpartum depression of mothers who live in intergenerational co-parenting families.
