International Trade Corridor Construction and China's Opening to the West——Empirical evidence from the New Western Land-Sea Corridor
Integrating westward into the joint construction of the"Belt and Road"and opening up new channels for the inter-national trade market are important propositions for China's high-level opening up in the new era. This article is based on panel data from 31 provinces in China from 2010 to 2022,taking the construction of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor as a quasi-natural experiment, and using the multi-period overlapping double difference method to systematically study the im-pact of the construction of the new international trade corridor on China's"opening to the west"and mechanism of action. The study found that the construction of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor has significantly promoted China's"opening to the west",with policy effects concentrated in the main corridor areas and coastal areas, and has mainly promoted westward ex-ports between China and developing countries,"Belt and Road"countries and RCEP countries.Open level. The construction of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor will mainly drive China's"opening to the west"through the trade cost saving effect of traditional infrastructure and digital infrastructure and the integration effect of market resources.Extensive research shows that the"opening to the west"effect of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor is sustainable and scalable, and its export spill-over effects mainly come from trade creation created through cooperation and co-construction in surrounding areas rather than trade diversion. The article provides empirical evidence for China to open up new channels for the international trade market in"opening to the west",avoid traditional issues of"opening to the east"such as Sino-US trade frictions and low-end lock-in of the global value chain, and provide policy inspiration for promoting high-level opening-up to the outside world.
