Institutional Formation and Economic Prosperity—A Review of the Academic Contributions of 2024 Nobel Laureates in Economics
Daron Acemoglu,Simon Johnson,and James A.Robinson have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics for their outstanding contributions to the study of how institutions are formed and how they affect economic prosperity.The new research methods they pioneered have greatly enhanced our understanding of global inequality.In theory,their research explains why institutional differences persist and how institutions change.Empirically,their work has dramatically promoted causal research on the impact of institutions on prosperity and revealed the historical roots of the weak institutional environ-ment in many low-income countries.This article summarizes the main achievements of the winners,sorts out the existing di-vergences and doubts,and further explains the important implications of the academic contributions of the prize for China's economic prosperity.
