The Changes of Downtown Zhongshan City in Modern Times and Functional Differentiation of Historical Streets
Spatial evolution of historical town of Zhongshan since the late Qing Dynasty is investigated in this paper through space syntax . The result shows that spatial configuration of the old and the new influences not only the transition of urban centers, but also the functional differentiation of spaces at the street level. By simulating the urban form and function dynamism syntactically and parametrically, the method not only enables research to gain a more precise view of urban evolution, but also raises issues on a more informed way of urban planning and design in order to protect historical urban fabrics in their integrity.
