Differentiated Renewal of Industrial Heritage under the Reflection of Multi-scale Spatial Characteristics:A Case Study of two Industrial Heritage Food Processing Sites in Guangzhou
With the continuous progress in urbanization and increasing construction needs for human settlements, urban renewal has reached a high-quality organic development phase. The protection of industrial heritage,an important subject of urban renewal, has evolved continuously. As one of the earliest trading ports in China,Guangzhou has abundant industrial facility heritage. Moreover, many creative industrial parks of industrial heritage have been developed as a response to upgrading industrial structures, economic benefits, and policy benefits.Due to the frequent occurrence of homogenization problems, some industrial parks are facing a difficult situation of forced demolition. As such, how to explore field characteristics of industrial heritage and realize sustainable future development through differentiated means is an important research topic.[Methods]A comparative study was carried out comparing the spatial features of two industrial heritage renewal projects with similar backgrounds. This study utilized the perspectives of the city, district, and heritage by combining theoretical technology of space syntax,POI data, building functions, and spatial layout analysis. On the macro-urban scale, the degree of vehicle-walking connection, location values, and spatial extensibility of industrial parks were analyzed through the degree of normalized integration, spatial efficiency, and depth value, thus disclosing location conditions and relationship between industrial parks and the city.On the meso-regional scale, the regional morphology was examined by degree of normalized integration and spatial efficiency.Meanwhile,a quantitative analysis was carried out on composite functional load capacity at different scales of the region based on symbiosis. The functional features of business activities were analyzed by combining the POI data of the region. On the micro-park scale, the spatial accessibility of visual field, spatial crowd gathering ability, and architectural pattern characteristics of the industrial parks were generally recognized through the degree of visual integration, degree of visual connectivity, and degree of intelligibility. The spatial distribution of functions after reconstruction was discussed.[Results]Results show that Zhujiang Party Pier(which observed the spatial development laws and formulated renewal strategy in accordance to spatial features)achieved significant heritage renewal effects.Macroscopically, with higher traffic accessibility and urban influences,Party Pier aims to be a new creative urban landmark of Guangzhou.Mesoscopically,Party Pier strengthens the venue beer cultural genes, innovates service business types, and forms the regional cultural creativity leisure supporting core zone.Microscopically,Party Pier fully develops the internal spatial value of heritage buildings, adjusts the external spatial pattern of buildings, and improves functional configuration and visual image simultaneously.[Conclusions]It is suggested to explore spatial features of regions where industrial heritage is found at multiple scales, and determine influencing factors(e.g.regional accessibility and location value)before renewal and renovation. On the macroscopic-urban scale, the location value of industrial heritage in cities should be judged to determine development orientation and service scope of industrial parks. On the meso-district scale, functional characteristics of the districts where industrial heritage sites are located should be evaluated for functional bearing capacity and service scope, and to determine types and proportion of service objects and admissable business activities. On the micro-park scale, the spatial layout characteristics and architectural pattern of industrial parks should be recognized.Additionally, functional layout and field adjustment should be performed by combining built-in functional characteristics to realize field and function integration.
