Active Shaping of Boundary Spaces of Adjacent Commercial Streets in University Towns Based on SD Method:A Case Study Based on Xintiandi Commercial Street,Chenggong District,Kunming City
In recent years, the scale of university town construction in China has expanded rapidly and a lot of commercial space has emerged around it.As a unique business model in university town space, commercial streets have become a component that cannot be ignored, which provides a place for teachers and students to have various commercial activities. In the context of market-led development, the diversification of commercial street space layouts influences the consumption behaviors of college students directly and thereby has a vital impact on the economic development of the college town. With the increasing proportion of commercial streets, they influence the economic development of university towns to some extent. The border space of the commercial streets with adjacent universities is the primary space connecting the commercial street and the adjacent universities. It also serves as a special zone connecting the commercial street with the outer space of a campus in the university town.It holds a vital role in dividing urban space, connecting the campus and forming characteristic campus culture. It also serves as the information transmission and material exchange medium with adjacent universities. It is responsible for resource exchange with the outer space of universities. Therefore, the design of the border space between the business street and adjacent universities not only influences the image of the whole university town but also is closely related to the physical and metal health of university students. Therefore,it is particularly important to make reasonable use of the border space between business streets and adjacent universities. At present, there are numerous problems in the border space present between business streets and adjacent universities such as traffic chaos, low utilization rate of space, lack of public rest facilities, single function form and separation from the campus. To address these problems,a case study based on Xintiandi Commercial Street of Chenggong University Town in Kunming was carried out. From the perspective of different user groups, physical and virtual parts of the border space between business streets and adjacent universities were investigated scientifically by using the SD method.By studying the relationship between the perception characteristics of the border space and its object indicators, four shortages were found to be present in the border space of Xintiandi Commercial Street as:chaotic traffic flow, lack of supporting facilities, lagging natural landscape and fuzzy communication places. To solve these problems, this study puts forward four optimization strategies as:reorganizing traffic flow lines to make it easier for people to travel on foot and by car, improving service facilities to achieve the supply-demand balance, enriching natural landscape levels to improve quality of space and integrating multiple communication places to meet specific needs. These optimization strategies aim to promote the integration between business streets and adjacent universities, improve the overall spatial image of the university town, activate the space of the university town, and provide a reference for the optimization and construction of border space between business streets and adjacent universities in Chenggong University Town in future.
