Research Review on the Low-carbon Path of Built Environment in University Campus
University campus, the basic unit of urban mesoscale,is having slow progress on carbon emission reduction due to the unique user groups and energy consumption.Strengthening low-carbon control of the built environment on university campus is vital for promoting students'health, upgrading campus space quality, and achieving a low-carbon healthy campus.Nowadays, the built environment of university campuses faces many challenges, including poor spatial planning, low building performance, mismatched roads and a chaotic landscape layout.By analyzing the influences of the built environment on university campus on carbon emissions, this study determined the influencing mechanism of built environmental elements on carbon emission in university campus, thus summarizing low-carbon paths for built environment on university campus.A total of 342 valid literatures on two mainstream databases(CNKI and WOSCC)published from January 2002 to December 2022 in China and abroad, were summarized by combining relevant standards and norms with the assistance of Citespace software. The basic characteristics of carbon emission were summarized based on the following five systems, namely, spatial planning of the built environments in university campuses, building operation, traffic and travelling, landscape creation and solid waste reuse.Research contents and research methods of existing low-carbon planning design of built environment in university campuses were analyzed from the perspective of theory and application. The influencing mechanism of built environmental factors on carbon emission in university campus was summarized. With the decline in attention towards planning and design of the built environment in new university campuses, upgrading, renewing and carbon emission reduction of built environment in university campuses will become major event in the coming period. The campus might shift attention from green development to further low-carbon development. In this study,a quantitative analysis on literatures concerning correlation between built environment and carbon emissions on campus was carried out.The relevant research progress and research status were elaborated. Moreover, existing shortcomings and research trends were summarized.(1)No unified theoretical system and standard norms for low-carbon built environmental evaluation in university campuses have been established yet.The low-carbon theory and methods for community built environment are inapplicable to campus built environment.(2)Research on carbon emission reduction in built environment on university campus focus on carbon emission reduction of a single system, but the coupling mechanism among different systems still remains unknown. The combined multi-factor carbon emission reduction principle shall be disclosed.(3)Building operations, the main source of carbon emissions in campus-built environment, focuses on improving the physical performance of buildings and utilization of equipment. However, they pay insignificant attention to carbon emission caused by subjective behaviors of people.(4)Indirect carbon emissions from spatial planning should be considered from the perspective of energy consumption at the beginning of planning and design of new campuses.(5)Artificial intelligence algorithms and models have been applied to the carbon reduction process in major campus built environment systems. To improve low-carbon guidance and control during the renewal of the campus built environment, the planning path for green and low-carbon campus built environment shall be set up according to associative carbon emissions among different campus built environmental systems and development modes of the campus.
