A Study on Placeness Evaluation of the Suzhou Pingjiang Historical and Cultural Block:From the Perspective of Tourist Perceptions
Historical and cultural blocks are an important cultural display of urban layout structures.Placeness presentation of such historical and cultural blocks plays an important role in the city cognition of people. However, the inaccurate and insufficient presentation of placeness makes it difficult to perceive the uniquness of historical blocks during cultural toursim development.Tourists are percetors of placeness of historical blocks, and the media allow further culture communication.Their perception level was used to evaluate references for the placeness of historical blocks in this study.Strategies to improve placeness were proposed, which included the demands of indigenous individuals, and may provide effective references for the protection and utilization of historical blocks.Based on the perception content of tourists, the strength of placeness was transformed into the level of tourist perception for evaluation, and the placeness status of historical and cultural blocks was quantitatively measured.(1)Using the three dimensions("material landscape","human action",and"local significance")of placeness perception elements put forward by Relf, placeness elements of material landscape and human action were extracted from perception content of tourists visiting the Suzhou Pingjiang Historical and Cultural Block using the grounded theory.Combined with the characteristics of historical blocks, the necessary content of its placeness significance was extracted, and a structural equation model of tourist perceptions to placeness was established.(2)An empirical study on the current situation of tourist perceptions to placeness of the Pingjiang Historical Block was carried out.In this empirical study, the path effect and perception level of various influencing variables,as well as their relationships, were described. The placeness status and problems of the study area were analyzed. The results found that with respect to tourist perception levels and degrees of influence, there were differences between the inheritance and renewal characteristics of the Pingjiang Historical Block.Variables related to renewal and utilization had great influences on tourist perceptions, but this perception level was low.On the contrary, variables related to inheritance characteristics had little influence on perception levels. The inheritance and preservation placeness of the Pingjiang Historical Block was considered good, but other sites were not entirely perceived by tourists due to spatial fragmentation and the implantation of complex symbols in the development process.Based on tourist perception statuses to placeness of the Pingjiang Historical Block, strategies to improve placeness were proposed in this study:1)public spaces should be constructed comprehensively from the perspective of material landscape, including a comfortable slow-moving system and serial leisure nodes.2)Spatial functions under the dimension of human action should be considered independently.Public facilities meeting demands of different subjects and renovation of the original real block space should be constructed differentially.3)The inheritance and dissemination of local culture under the dimension of local significance may advocate for indigenous people to inherit regional culture and promote tourists to spread local culture. The placeness continuation of historical and cultural blocks, represented by the Pingjiang Historical and Cultural Block,is at risk of leading to insufficient development momentum and unsustainable protection. Therefore, the update of historical blocks under the wave of parallel development and protection should be considered under the current concept of sustainable development. It is necessary for all parties to cooperate, pay attention to the interests of multiple subjects, and standardize disharmonious elements at all levels of space and society in the protection and utilization of historical and cultural blocks to accurately convey the significance of placeness
