From Prototype to Readaptation:Architectural Design Strategies for Educational Poverty Alleviation:A Case Study Based on a Series of Engineering Projects in Siyuan Experimental Schools
In the 21st century, poverty alleviation through education in China relies heavily on high-quality and efficient campus construction in economically underdeveloped areas. To this end,the Yanai Foundation in Hong Kong spearheaded an 11-year educational architecture initiative known as the"Siyuan Experimental School Series Project".Collaborating with local governments and design institutes from 2007 to 2018,the Yanai Foundation completed seven design iterations and established a total of 222 nine-year full-boarding public schools in impoverished counties across 17 provinces. The operational mechanism, iterative strategies, and implementation outcomes of the engineering design of the Siyuan Experimental School were comprehensively analyzed to identify the operational pathways, effects, and contemporary significance of the prototype-based adaptive design strategies that are needed for educational poverty alleviation. The results provide historical experiences and strategic references for the comprehensive advancement of educational engineering construction in China during the post-poverty alleviation era.Firstly, the Siyuan Experimental School Series Project was reviewed and the significance of such a large-scale poverty alleviation project through educational architectural design was discussed.Secondly, the traditional design mode problems were highlighted, and the background and innovative ideas for the prototype-based design mode were analyzed.Next, the iterative design process of the Siyuan Experimental School Series Project was described.Further, the invariable design principle and the prototype design responses and iterative process under updated pursuits were discussed.Furthermore,an adaptive redesign strategy based on the prototype was introduced through the 5th generation of the Siyuan Experimental School design. Finally, the advantages of a prototype-based design pattern for educational poverty alleviation were analyzed and its contemporary value was highlighted. This series of projects achieved top design through a prototype design strategy, and this design was implemented through practical construction in cooperation with local governments and design institutions. In the iterative process, this strategy can lead to high-quality design results in response to evolving demands. This strategy can cope with the dual demands of speed and quality in large-scale educational poverty alleviation construction projects and inspired the construction plan of the"Lotus School"in Hunan Province in 2017.Moreover,this strategy is an important resource for the promotion of high-quality balanced development of basic public education in the post-poverty alleviation through education era.The design and construction of Siyuan Experimental School is a profound educational architecture poverty alleviation response. The prototype-based design mode provides new ideas for coordinated multi-production design and can quickly achieve high standards against resource constraints. This research has significance for China's education development in the post-poverty alleviation era and for promoting campus construction in developing countries.
