Evolution and Prospects of Traditional Rural Settlements in China
Traditional rural settlements, which carry a long history of agricultural civilization, constitute the largest and most widely distributed cultural heritage system in China. With the promotion of the national rural revitalization strategy, the survival and development of traditional rural settlements face significant opportunities and challenges. In this context,it is necessary to review and sort out the research on these settlements, explore the mechanisms and laws, and investigate directions and prospects for future studies. This review is conducted by exploring and reviewing associated historical data, including journals, newspapers, works, and policy documents.Combined with the practical development of the national economy, culture, social background, and rural construction, research into the development of traditional rural settlements since the 1930s can be divided into four stages:conception(1930s~1960s),germination(1960s~1980s),startup(1990s),and development(in the 21st century). Moreover, the study summarizes the historical background, driving force, and research paradigm characteristics of research on traditional rural settlements at each stage, reproduces the development process in China over the past century, discloses its driving force as being the demand for practical development, and facilitates rural construction practices through feedback. On this basis, academia can recognize the future trends and directions of research in the field, thus promoting and facilitating relevant studies and practices.
