Analysis of Public Transformation of Spaces in Traditional Lingnan Gardens
Traditional Lingnan gardens were originally built to provide spiritual support to individuals. However, traditional Lingnan gardens, which are currently open to the public, are highly publicized.Visitors derive direct and rapid spatial experience during a visit to open traditional Lingnan gardens except for the initial connotation.Places that strongly attract most visitors may not overlap with nodes set for individual spatial feeling.Previous studies involving traditional Lingnan gardens concentrated on the analysis of subjective settings of builders on individual perception of spatial images, while ignoring the objective feelings of visitors in response to garden space.Mastering the attractiveness of public garden spaces is important for the construction and renovation of Lingnan gardens. The Qinghui Garden was studied initially.Based on Depthmap analysis and field record statistics, visitors were driven by the concept of collective unconscious based on spatial structural system. To determine the quantitative expression of attractiveness in the garden,a spatial axial model of Qinghui Garden was built and its constituent values were calculated. The correlation between garden elements, attraction coefficient transformation via weighting method and visitor flow at the node in field survey statistics was analyzed using SPSS software. Thus,a linear regression equation of visitor flow characteristics in public spaces was developed. This equation was used to predict spatial attractiveness of Liang Garden in Foshan. Results were generally consistent with visitor flows in field statistics.Hence, the regression equation can be used as the formula to predict visitor flow in traditional Lingnan garden spaces or determine the attractiveness of key spaces after type translation. The equation represents the visitor flow features in the public Lingnan gardens based on structural characteristics and digital modeling of a combination of construction elements. Therefore,a formula was generated to identify and interpret the popularity of traditional Lingnan garden spaces.Further,Depthmap and SPSS were used to supplement studies involving traditional Lingnan garden spaces based on space syntax theory. The goal was to determine the association between spatial elements after transformation from private villa to public spaces and structural features. The regression linear equation intuitively reflects the spatial perception of visitors when moving in traditional Lingnan gardens. Results show that the attraction of traditional Lingnan garden spaces to most visitors is attributed to the comprehensive effect of spatial structural characteristics and garden elements. The visitors subconsciously remained in areas within the garden with an abundance of spatial attractiveness.Such laws also can be applied to construct new Lingnan gardens.Based on linear regression analysis, the attraction of some spaces in advance and gardening elements were set based on appropriate nodes to identify areas with significant attraction. As a result, the design of a strategy to guide visitors represents a positive approach. In brief, the expression of spatial features based on linear regression provides an analytical method with quantitative indices and controllable design to construct new Lingnan gardens.
