Rural Children's Non-Cognitive Ability and Their Earnings in Adulthood
Non-cognitive ability during childhood in rural areas may have a significant impact on their employment achievement in adulthood.Using instrumental variable approach and based on of CFPS 2010-2020,the article finds that rural laborers'non-cognitive ability in childhood has a significant positive effect on their earnings as adults.Heterogeneity analysis shows that such effect is more positive and significant for the childhood at the age of 12-15 compared with the childhood at the age of 1-12,and rural children's non-cognitive ability brings about more favorable earnings to the male and the low-income groups.Mechanism analysis shows that rural children's non-cognitive ability contributes to the improvement of their earnings by influencing educational choice,occupational screening,and social capital.The above findings suggest that timely attention to the cultivation and development of rural laborers'childhood non-cognitive abilities can significantly improve their employment achievements and accelerate the realization of high-quality population development to support Chinese-style modernization.
