Characteristics,Trends and Prognosis of Foreigners Residing in Chinese Mainland:Based on the Data from the 6th and 7th Censuses
Using the data from the 6th and 7th censuses conducted in 2010 and 2020,this paper examines the latest characteristics and trends of foreigners residing in Chinese mainland.The findings reveal a significant increase in the number of foreigners between 2010 and 2020 with a reversal in the gender structure,a trend toward younger demographic age distribution and the sinking educational attainment.The original countries of the foreigners have diversified further.Geographically,the eastern China has a marked decline while Yunnan province has a significant increase in the number and proportion of foreigners.Additionally,the proportion of short-term foreign residents decrease while those residing in China for medium to long-term periods have a substantial increase primarily driven by employment and settlement opportunities.In general,the characteristics and trend of foreigners residing in Chinese Mainland are influenced by both global migration trends and the COVID-19 pandemic and the prognosis show that China may continue to have even an larger influx of foreign residents considering China's future development and global migration trends.In response,it is essential to develop,establish,and enhance institutional frameworks to accommodate international migrants in China so as to leverage the advantages and dynamism of the international labor market to address the China's future talent needs in the context of China's emerging trend of negative population growth.
