Can Husbands'Higher Participation in Childcare Reduce Wives'Opportunity Costs of Motherhood? An Analysis from the Perspective of Wage
The realization of Chinese modernization needs the support of high-quality population development. One of the major challenge for the strategy of high-quality population development is the low fertility which is inextricably caused by high costs of raising children. As the existing researches shed few lights on the opportunity cost of raising children, this paper is to empirically demonstrate the effect of husbands'childcare participation on wives'opportunity costs of motherhood based on the data from China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)2016 and 2020.The results find that husbands'participation in childcare has a dampening effect on wives'opportunity cost of motherhood by alleviating their time constraints and increasing their social capital. However, such effect can be significantly weakened among the couples whose wife has more traditional gender values or boasts of higher level of education level. The findings can be of great practical references in reducing the burden of parenting, promoting gender equality, and facilitating high-quality population development.
