Preparation and characterization of waterborne epoxy latexes
The waterborne epoxy latexes were prepared by introducing the polar carboxylic groups from methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the functions) monomer, then neutralizing with triethylamine and phase -invcrsing with addition of water. The influence of reaction temperature, solvent, neutralizer and other conditions on the reaction was discussed;the effect of initiator dibenzoyl peroxide (BPO) amount on the viscosity, particle size and stability of latexes was studied. Then, the cured film was obtained by using waterborne curing agent DO4 and the influence of curing agent amount and curing temperature on the properties of films was investigated. Results show that when using the mixed solvent of propylene glycol methyl ether and n -butanol to dissolve epoxy resin and triethylamine as the neutralizer the latexes prepared at reaction temperature of 1 1 0℃ have good properties. When increasing the BPO amount, the viscosity of latexes decreased. The tests show that all the latexes have good dilution and freeze -thaw properties and storage stability. When the curing agent amount is 1 5% and the drying temperature is 80℃,the combination properties of films are good.
