Perspective-taking but not other dimensions of empathy mediates the relationship between dispositional awe and prosociality
Research has shown that awe can enhance prosociality in adults, and empathy plays a mediating role between this association. However, the effects of awe on prosocial tendencies in middle school students and the mediating effects of dif-ferent dimensions of empathy have not been investigated. Therefore, this study employed a cross-sectional design,in which 910 middle school students completed measures of dispositional awe, prosocial tendencies, and interpersonal reaction index.Structural equation modeling and bootstrap techniques were used to estimate the effects. The results revealed that dispositional awe significantly predicted prosocial tendencies and willingness for public welfare in middle school students.Perspective-tak-ing,one of the dimensions of empathy, showed a significant mediating effect between dispositional awe and prosocial tenden-cies,while the mediating effects of personal distress, empathic concern, and fantasy were not significant.Furthermore, these results possesses identity in both the male and female groups. These findings suggest that dispositional awe can positively pre-dict ones'perspective-taking,thereby enhancing the prosociality of middle school students.
