Peiyang University marks the beginning of modern Chinese higher education.It is also one of the first government-run universities to carry out sporting events in modern times.However,there is disagreement on when Peiyang University held its first intramural and first intercollegiate athletic games.Using a combination of literature review,logical analysis,and keyword search in Chinese and English modern history databases,this study examines the historical materials related to the modern-time sports competitions at Peiyang University,and confirms the exact time of its first intramural and intercollegiate sporting events.The paper concludes that:according to historical materials,Peiyang University held its first intramural sports meeting on November 27th,1897.The competition included 12 sports and a total of more than 170 participants.The university held its first intercollegiate event on May 20th,1899,where the teams from Peiyang University,Luhan Railway College and Tientsin Naval College competed in 11 sports.Considering Peiyang's historical role and the actual dates of these games,the first intramural meeting held at Peiyang University on November 27th,1897 can be regarded as the origin of China's university sports competitions in modern times.
