China as Method:William Chambers'writing on Chinese gardens and its empiristic construction
Based on his experiences in China,William Chambers wrote successivelyof the Art of Laying Out Gardens among the Chinese,A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening and so on to describe Chinese gardens.Influenced by British empirical aesthetics,Chambers framed his experiencesabout gardens in the theoretical framework of sensationalism and devoted himself to shaping the aesthetic effect of gardens to stimulate emotions, thus changing the ideological shape of Chinese art of gardening. These texts embodied the writing strategy of taking China as method and mapping and improving itself by disguising and constructing China.
