Sumeru Mountain and the Avatamsaka World:New Exploration of the Meaning of the Centre Columns inCaves 302 and 303 of the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes from the Early Sui Dynasty
As the only two cases of inverted conical center column in Mogao Grottoes, the style of the center column in Cave 302 and 303 of Mogao Grottoes is quite rare.At present, the academic circle mostly compares it to Mount Sumeru and tries to discuss it from multiple perspectives such as the form of Mount Sumeru World, the concentric circle structure of the center column, and the connection between the center column and the thousands of Buddhas surrounding it,and so on,which still lacks scriptural interpretation and image observation.Through the re-observation of Mogao GrottoesNo.302 and 303,this paper intends to compare the images within two caves, tease out the key details within them, and explore the possible image of the Avatamsaka World under the ideology of the Huayan school of Buddhism.
