The Theory of"Decorum"in the Late Italian Renaissance:Case study of Gian Paolo Lomazzo's writings
The principle of"decorum"traced its roots to the rhetorical traditions of the classical era,and was expounded upon by some theorists and religious figures during the Italian Renaissance,and then was systematically discussed in the works of Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo,a noted exponent of the Italian Mannerism theoretical framework.This paper centers on the multifaceted aspects of"decorum",namely"natural","artificial","verisimilitude","virtue",and analyses the philosophical underpinnings of this principle along with its influence on artists'subjective"expression".
