The Fallacy of the"Jun Chang Nei He"——A Review of Tong Zhongliang's Shang He Lun
Tong Zhongliang's Shang He Lun seems to be rich in content and well-founded,but in fact it is only a mathematical deduction of a"coincidence"phenomenon. The"extreme similarity"between the Chinese and Western scale structures is the result of the"pythagorean tuning",rather than"five degrees of double ring"and"bipolar symmetry"because of the"shang he".This is the basic logical premise."Shang",as a"fictional"concept, only has practical significance in specific"modal scales",such as"Shang Sheng"and"Shang Diao"."Taking Shang tone as the central axis"has long been proposed by composers and theorists and widely applied in creative practice. The"starting point"of the ancient Chinese"Twelve Temperaments"is"Huang Zhong",not"Shang"which has no pitch meaning.Whether it is the"Zhi mode type"or"Wei mode type"pentatonic scale,or the"Guqin Five Tunes"or"Min Jian Jie Zi Shou Fa",their respective temperamental sound systems, structural principles, and expressive forms are not related to the"shang he".The"Shang He Lun"of the so-called"Jun Chang Nei He"does not hold.
