How can an Actor Evoke Emotions True to a Character?——A Review on Theatrical Performance of the Minming Society in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China
At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,the Minming Society attracted many talented theatrical performers.Critics highly evaluated performance true to a character,expression and action true to the emotion,singing and dancing true to the situation,and meticulous costume and make-up.All these aspects were considered essential in the criteria of"evoking emotions true to a character."Examining the criticism of the Minming Society's theatrical performance in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China can greatly contribute to the development of Chinese theatrical criticism and theory.
