Moving Forward with Green Waves:A Study on the Construction Mechanism of Green Dynamic Capability in Manufacturing Enterprises:Vertical Single Case Study Based on Delong Steel
In recent years,with the global warming and worsening environmental pollution,as well as the achievement of climate change agreements such as the Paris Agreement,reducing carbon emissions and sustainable development have become the focus of attention for governments,businesses,and the public around the world.Manufacturing enterprises have become key to achieving carbon emissions targets and green development due to their high pollution and energy consumption production methods.However,facing the time and cost pressures of green transformation,manufacturing enterprises often exhibit passive acceptance or even green-washing.Existing literature suggests that green transformation is the result of enterprises passively adapting to environmental regula-tions,lacking attention to organizational agency,and lacking in-depth exploration of the process and micro mechanisms of proactive response.The green dynamic capability theory suggests that enterprises establish green dynamic capabilities beyond environmental regulations by perceiving,capturing green opportunities,and allocating green resources to implement proactive environmental strat-egies.However,there is no literature that fully explains what kind of green dynamic capabilities enterprises need to build,and how to build green dynamic capabilities to actively respond to environmental needs and achieve green transformation.Opportunity alertness and asset orchestration have become important theoretical perspectives for exploring the green dynamic ca-pabilities of manufacturing enterprises.In the context of green transformation,manufacturing enterprises need to cross policies,technologies,and markets to seek green opportunities,and allocate organizational assets to capture green opportunities.However,due to process and cost constraints,manufacturing enterprises often find it difficult to quickly perceive and access green opportuni-ties in the environment.Opportunity alertness can scan,correlate,and evaluate opportunity information in the environment,actively identify potential opportunities,but existing research lacks attention to managers'proactive response and what kind of environmental stimuli to respond to.In addition,manufacturing enterprises not only need to carry out green transformation of existing assets,but also introduce new green assets to improve their pollution control level.Therefore,asset orchestration is a behavioral strategy for managers to allocate enterprise assets to capture green opportunities during the green transformation process.However,existing lit-erature does not distinguish the differences between asset orchestration and resource management,and lacks in-depth exploration of asset orchestration mechanisms.To answer the research question of how manufacturing enterprises can build green dynamic capabilities to achieve green transforma-tion,this article selects Delong Steel as the research object to explore the process mechanism of building green dynamic capabilities for manufacturing enterprises.Case analysis reveals that firstly,manufacturing enterprises have a capability building mechanism of"Opportunity alertness-Asset orchestration-Green dynamic capability"in green transformation,and exhibit a capability transi-tion path of"Immediacy-Adaptability-Foresight"at different stages;Secondly,the paradigm for identifying green opportunities in manufacturing enterprises manifests as being alert to opportunities in systems,technologies,and markets,and actively identifying potential green opportunities in dynamic environments;Thirdly,the capture strategy for green opportunities in manufacturing enter-prises includes internal asset coordination,external asset linkage,activation of general assets,and deployment of specialized assets,capturing green opportunities in dynamic environments through the combination and arrangement of different assets.Fourthly,green dynamic capabilities can be deconstructed into green value perception,green technology innovation,green digital empowerment,green industry coupling,and exhibit differentiated characteristics at different stages.The research contributions of this article include the following aspects:firstly,exploring the internal mechanism of enterprises build-ing green dynamic capabilities to achieve green transformation,deconstructing the core elements of green dynamic capabilities and the ability transition path of"immediacy adaptability foresight",and expanding the explanatory boundaries of dynamic capability theory in enterprise green transformation research.Secondly,exploring the identification paradigm and capture strategies of green opportunities in enterprises from the perspective of managerial cognition and action,innovatively introducing managerial alertness and Asset Orchestration actions into the theoretical framework of green dynamic capabilities,contributing to the research gap caused by the lack of attention to the micro basis of green dynamic capabilities in existing literature.Thirdly,from the perspectives of oppor-tunity alertness and asset orchestration,this paper explores the action process of enterprises in identifying and capturing green op-portunities,and constructs a micro mechanism of"Opportunity alertness-Asset orchestration-Green dynamic capability",providing a new theoretical perspective for enterprises to achieve green transformation.
