The Rising of the Machine:Generative AI Traceability,Evolution,and Future Prospects
Since the introduction of GPT-1 in 2018,the rapid de-velopment of generative artificial intelligence has brought a huge impact on the management practices of enterprises and organiza-tions around the world,and the study of AI-generated content has rapidly become one of the hotspots of attention for scholars at home and abroad.However,previous AIGC research has focused on core technology breakthroughs,application scenario convergence,data security protection,etc.,and the research topics are scattered and have not yet formed a unified research framework.In order to make up for the lack of existing research,this paper explores the fol-lowing three questions:(1)What is the origin of AIGC research in management science?(2)What is the impact of the combination of AIGC and management practices on the technology itself,business management and the external environment so far?(3)What are the potential future directions of AIGC research in management?Based on the Technology-Organization-Environment(TOE)framework,this paper extensively searches,organizes and analyzes AIGC-re-lated research in important domestic and international journals,summarizes the knowledge framework of AIGC research evolution,and proposes a framework for the future research outlook of AIGC accordingly.Firstly,through literature review and combing,this paper defines AIGC as"text,code,image,video and voice content generated by generative AI algorithmic models based on automation,high efficiency and large-scale creation".After that,this paper takes philosophical discernment as the entry point to trace the origin of AIGC research from the three dimensions of the origin of emer-gence,cornerstones,and driving capabilities,and comprehensively traces the emergence and development of the research on AIGC technology and management practices.The results show that AIGC research initially originated from the philosophers'discussion on whether machines have the ability to think intelligently,and the philosophical thinking drove the rise and development of research on AIGC technology and AIGC applied to management practice.At the same time,the three elements of arithmetic evidence,algorithm,and computing power as the cornerstone of the construction of the AIGC subject,together with twinning,editing,and creation ability in management science applied AIGC research development played an important role in promoting.Secondly,through the combination of LDA clustering and manu-al summarization,the thematic distribution of AIGC research is clearly extracted,including technology,applications and negative impacts.Then,based on the Technology-Organization-Environ-ment(TOE)framework,the theoretical basis of AIGC-related management research is systematically sorted out and summarized from three perspectives,namely,technology and business value,management practice and theory,and negative impacts and organi-zation environment,taking into account the application of theory and management practice.The analysis results show that the con-tinuous evolution of AIGC technology system has prompted AIGC technology to be widely used in the management practice of various industries,and the value of AIGC technology empowering business model change is becoming more and more prominent.In particular,the emergence and development of pre-training models and multi-modal technologies have greatly enhanced the generalized learning capability of generative AI algorithms,provided support for enter-prise operations,and inspired domestic and international scholars to study the application effect of AIGC technology in enterprise management practices.Further,with the deep integration of AIGC with management practices in various industries,various problems such as data leakage,dissemination of false information,conceptu-al drift,and moral and ethical issues have arisen,and the negative impacts involving the connotation of human-computer collabora-tion have gradually emerged.This has brought many challenges to those enterprises using AIGC tools in the fields of organizational operation management,information management,marketing and other management areas,and at the same time put forward higher requirements for the healthy development of related laws and exter-nal environment,and many scholars have begun to pay attention to the relationship between the risks brought about by the application of AIGC and the management of enterprises and external environ-ment.Finally,the literature is further analyzed qualitatively,starting from AIGC and enterprise management practice to analyze in depth the management problems that may arise from the application of AIGC,and to give potentially feasible research directions according to the exact problem counterparts,as well as to propose a framework for the outlook of AIGC research.The analysis results show that the existing AIGC research mainly describes the technical concepts and practical effects,and few studies follow the scientific and standard-ized research methods to analyze the enabling role of AIGC on cor-porate macro-strategy,the solution to the negative impacts,and also the problem of insufficient theoretical innovation.In view of this,this paper proposes a framework for the outlook of AIGC research from the following four perspectives:(1)Furtherly to explore the enabling role and innovation mode of AIGC in a wider macro-man-agement perspective,expanding to multi-industry fields.(2)Intro-ducing multiple theoretical perspectives,exploring the applicability of traditional management theories in AIGC scenarios,and con-structing an interdisciplinary theoretical framework.(3)Explore in depth the possible solutions of negative impacts of AIGC in various aspects of enterprise management.(4)Adopt diverse research meth-ods to conduct comprehensive research,rationally utilize AIGC to assist research and management,and enhance the explanatory pow-er of AIGC management research.The current research makes important theoretical contributions.This paper traces the AIGC research for the first time,providing scholars in related fields with a clear vein of AIGC research.On this basis,this paper elaborates the evolution of AIGC research and reveals the whole process system of AIGC in management research.Further,this paper reveals the limitations and future directions of the existing research on AIGC,discusses how the combination of AIGC technology and management will affect management practic-es,research theories and methods,and expands the research ideas for the subsequent theoretical research.This research also has important practical implications.By identi-fying the risks of AIGC in enterprise management and considering China's unique social background,this paper looks forward to the post epidemic era when Chinese SMEs should design highly adapt-able innovation strategies with the help of AIGC technology,which provides reference for enterprises to cope with the complex system management problems that may occur in the context of the digital economy.At the same time,it puts forward the direction of improv-ing the regulatory policy for preventing and managing the negative impacts of AIGC.
