Competition and Coordination of Regional Economic Growth:Evidence from the Decomposition of the Economic Growth Rate
Understanding the interaction of regional economic growth and the mechanisms be-hind it is essential to address the problem of uneven regional development. This paper decom-poses economic growth into on-target growth and off-target growth based on the economic growth targets set by local governments at the beginning of each year, constructs a spatial weight matrix based on the textual similarity of the 2009-2019 prefecture-level city government work reports and the geographical and economic distances between prefecture-level cities, and uses spatial econometric models to study the interaction in regional economic growth. The results show that, firstly, the mechanism behind regional economic growth interaction is manifested in both competition and coordination, with the interaction of on-target growth reflecting more competition and the interaction of off-target growth reflecting more coordination.Secondly, there is an opposite trend of competition and coordination in regional economic interaction.;the long-term initiatives of local governments to promote innovation and improve the environment reduce their competition in the pursuit of short-term economic growth rates. The results of the study have important implications for understanding the interactions between regions in China and promoting coordinated regional development.
