Innovation Flows from Trade:Novel Evidence from Chinese Firms'Patent Citations
International trade and innovation is one of the core topics in both fields of interna-tional economics and innovation economics, where technology flows and spillover is an impor-tant perspective and channel. This paper measures cross-border technology flows and spillover with backward citation data of Chinese firms'patents to identify the causal effect of China's for-eign trade on firm innovation through the channel of technology flows. This paper shows that importing has a positive impact on the backward citations of Chinese firms'patents, that is,other things equal, the more a firm imports from a country, the more the patents of that country are cited in the firm's patents;while exporting does not matter. We further show that import source countries'technology advantage and the firms'technology absorption capacity are key determinants of the heterogeneous effects of technology flows and spillover. This paper has some implications on"double circulation"and high-level"opening up"in the stage of innova-tion-led development.
