The Legacy of History:The Impact of Traditional Clan Culture on Regional Long-Term Economic Growth
Traditional clan culture has a profound impact on long-term regional develop-ment.Using genealogical data from the Ming and Qing dynasties to measure clan culture, this paper systematically examines the impact of traditional clan culture on long-term eco-nomic growth in China. It finds that regions with a stronger clan culture during the Ming and Qing dynasties had higher levels of contemporary economic development. The finding still holds after adding a series of control variables and regressions using instrumental variables. The mechanism analysis suggests that traditional clan culture had a positive long-term impact on economic growth by increasing the level of human capital, increasing the provision of public goods, reducing financing costs, and promoting enterprise development. This study contributes to a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the historical and cultural roots of regional economic development differences, while highlighting the contemporary value of China's excellent traditional culture.
