Between the fourth and sixth centuries in the Byzantine Empire, the image of Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of wine, underwent a marked change from a"joy-giver"to a Jesus-like"saviour",and then to a"mortal",which eliminated his divinity. This change indicates that as Christianity gradually became dominant in the Byzantine Empire, the Church creatively absorbed, transformed, and incorporated ancient Greek culture, and integrated it with Christian culture.Christianity gradually became the most important religious force in society. This is one of the most prominent features of the Byzantine Empire during the era of transformation.
