Application and mechanism of functional forage and its extracts in animal production
Addressing the current issues of single feed material sources and limited comprehensive utiliza-tion technology, outdated biotechnology in the development of unconventional feed materials, lack of functional components, and the chaotic use of exogenous additives, this study focused on the potential high-quality Compos-itae and Leguminosae forage resources in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. The study aimed to optimize forage biorefining technology and establish a technical evaluation system for the research and development of active sub-stances in typical forages from different grasslands, thereby improving the quality and efficiency of unconventional feed materials.Functional forage, with its high nutritional value, was favored by livestock and constitutes about 20%~30% of the plant species in grasslands. However, due to the presence of specific components, the direct u-tilization by herbivorous livestock was limited.Despite the unique chemical compositions of these plants, they had beneficial effects on herbivorous livestock. The secondary metabolites of these plants were also effective compo-nents of plant extract feed additives. This paper summarized the biological characteristics and effective compo-nents of functional forage and their active substances both domestically and internationally and provided a founda-tion for future research and development in this field.
