The collapse of coal wall slices and the falling of roof are important factors affecting the safe mining of coal mines.Currently, common hydraulic supports have a large effective supporting area and a long time for moving and disengaging from the roof, which easily leads to problems such as coal wall collapse and roof fall, causing the support to become unstable again.By analyzing the mechanism of roof instability,a mathematical model of an equivalent masonry beam structure was established. The model calculated the strength conditions for the roof to be damaged during the mining process,as well as the influence of the supporting area on roof damage. At the same time, the design of an active safety hydraulic support beam device was proposed. On the basis of meeting the original functions of the existing hydraulic support beam, the beam device was designed to achieve effective support for the roof and incremental movement relative to the main beam. This accomplishes the goal of active safety support for hydraulic supports and reduces the probability of masonry beam damage. The improvement of the ZY 4800/18/38 hydraulic support was carried out,and finite element analysis was performed on the beam device under typical conditions, with the results meeting the design requirements.
