"Niudiechuan"during the Dengguo Period of the Northern Wei Dynasty
In the sixth year of Dengguo of the Northern Wei Dynasty(391),Tuoba Gui was stationed in Ni-udiechuan in the western part of Southern Gobi grassland, which should be Ming'anchuan in the Urad Front Ban-ner of Bayannur City,Inner Mongolia today, that is,Datongchuan in the Tang Dynasty.Tuoba gui was to attack Tiefu while blocking the contact between Tiefu Liu Weichen in Hetao and Rouran in north of Yinshan.Tuoba's crusade against Rouran in October of that year was an unpremeditated war.Tiefu had been a regular presence in Yinshan north of the Yellow River during the Dengguo period. The north of Wula Mountains, where Niudiechuan was located, was the main part of the northern border of Qin and Han dynasties, which controlled the roads from Wuyuan and Shuofang to the desert steppe in the middle and western Inner Mongolia and even to the Northern Go-bi."Niudiechuan"is a Chinese place name that should come from the combination of transliteration and free trans-lation of Zhang Gun,a soldier in Tuoba's army.
