KANG Youwei's View of Religion——An Examination Centered on Shintoism
The Meiji Restoration was not only a reform of the political and economic system, but also a series of religious reforms centered on Shinto in the ideological field. After the Sino-Japanese War,Kang Youwei began to study the experience of the Meiji Restoration. And the Hundred Days'Reform led by him was mimicked after the Meiji Restoration. However,Looking through a series of Kang's writings or texts about his Japanese experience,it was found out that Kang Youwei seldom wrote about Japanese Shinto, and even asserted that Japanese Shinto was"an old custom of Eastern Barbarians, which is not worth mentioning".This paper explores two questions,1.Why did Kang Youwei hold such a disdainful view of Japanese Shinto. And 2.what kind of religious view was behind it.Kang Youwei's"Japanese Bibliography","Japan's Change of Government",and other related writings on Japanese Shinto, are analyzed and used to clarify Kang Youwei's view on Japanese Shinto. It shows that Kang Youwei's un-derstanding of Japanese Shinto is not only in line with his predecessors, but also with his own unique perspective and concern.
