A First Look at Pole-Top Bells of the Korean Peninsula
This article compiles the data on 22 pole-top bells unearthed from the Korean Peninsula, with a focus on analyzing and studying 5 pole-top bells unearthed from the Chopo-ri,Shinpung,and Chongsong-ri sites. The pole-top bells can be divided into two categories based on the height and top-to-bottom ratio, and there may be relative differences in the timing between the two types of pole-top bells.By analyzing the temporal and spatial range of the existence of the pole-top bells through the tomb shape and the characteristics of the coexisting relics, and referring to relevant historical documents,it is speculated that the pole-top bells unearthed from the Korean Peninsula has the same function as the pole-top ornaments widely found in the Eurasian region, and that they are symbols of the identity of special people in important activities, and further inferred that the appearance of the pole-top bells is closely related to the formation of early state in the Korean Peninsula.Further in-depth research is needed on the origin and dissemination of the pole-top bell.
